Default Looking to Host a server

Now that I'm starting too get rolling in the affiliate thing. I'm shooting for hosting all my sites from my own home. I'm just looking for some practical information about what I'll need so I can do some planning. So far, I know I'll need the following:

1- A Comcast Business Class connection (probably the 12/2 line until I see DOCSYS 3 become active)
1- A server

So, I'll have access to a Static IP that will house my sites and a Dynamic IP that I'll use for my general web use. I'm assuming the business modem/router Comcast will give me will be able to sort that out with a bit of setup.

The server I won't go crazy with to start. Something mid-range. I'll probably bleed Tim for some tips on optimization.

What else should I be looking at?

PS For Tim. If I do get this set up, it'll allow you to dump the raw video for me to edit right on my server at the end of your broadcast. Which will allow me to do better and quicker edits.

Be sure to multibox with Pwnboxer Multiboxing Software just because its better than the rest.

I would opt for linux box instead of a windows box.. so less hassles with ... well with cpu usage... but bigger cpu then u could use windows server but... just more hassle hosting websites... as i am assuming u use php and well windows boxs are hard to use if you want the FULL options as ... if u use xampp or similar things then u don't get FULL aspect of php and functions imo ok well enough about that but i would look into a "router-switch" for the options and well the info comes in to the modem.. from modem goes to switch one to server one to router.. server is set with the dynmic ip on box hard wired then the router has the 2nd ip which is static

Rosh just talk to me I can hook you up.

I'm sort of sick now, my voice and throat are F'd up, so give me a day or so off of Skype. Every so often when I do lengthy broadcasts it destroys my voicebox (bleeds, eww), so give me a lil bit to get back tip top.

Linux all the way btw.

EDIT: Actually dumping raw video would be really nice, so maybe on your end would be nice.

If anyone's interested I'm willing to remotely install Gentoo Linux servers time permitting

I used to volenteer for the gentoo linux project as an network infrastructure admin. If you want godlike server software custom built specific to your server hardware and purpose i'm willing to help. Access to new computer hardware assists my general knowledge of how software will react with computer hardware so it's a win-win bargain that helps my long term agility and capability as a network systems engineer.

here's a link to a tutorial I authored back in 2004 on gentoo linux forums that's since been retired but has over 187,000 page views. A bit of a reference perhaps...

I'd just go with Ubuntu server, its a piece of cake, even that fat boy who fake sword fighted (word inventing ftw) to Star Wars could do it.
