| Im planning to study Comuter Science or Software Engineering in college but I have very little knowledge of languages. I don't know if I need to know any languages beforehand. I can do lots in LibertyBASIC and Java for Unity. I barely know the first mini book of my Seven Book C++ compendium. I want to learn Lua or XML for work or play I want to learn wierd languages like SNOBOL or Python for the lulz

| Super Moderator | Most colleges should start you off with Java (at least mine did). From there, you gain the skillset for other programming languages. Java, like other languages is object-oriented. You should be able to pick up whatever language is being taught you. Also, remember: you can always Google a method if you aren't quite sure how it works For my internship redesigning a company intranet site, I used HTML with C# as the code behind and SQL Server for databases.

| Further proof that IT skills are not learned in college, but in fact, learned by having a personal endeavor to self teach and self progress. Java? Basic? Hah suuuure ![]() C/C++, PHP, SQL, OO generals.... ... or bust. |

| Im applying for an engineering program this summer at Cal Tech and I was wondering whether or not I should start programming again before I go, and specifically in what language.
