| Super Moderator | Getting PHP to work locally with Apache was a bit of a process, as I had to get it set up for my current job. An alternative is to use a website for PHP (if you have a domain, that is). If you go the Ubuntu server route, be sure you install SSH tools so you can access the server from a SSH client like puTTY or the Fire SSH firefox plugin. But more importantly, install the LAMP tools (Linux Apache MYSQL PHP) and that should do the trick. I have zero experience setting up a linux server though, but I'll be getting the box midweek.

| you don't absolutely need a full physical machine to install and learn to use linux... virtualbox will do nicely. Despite the common perception that just using ubuntu as the distribution of choice will provide everything you need my 8 years or so of advanced experience with linux was garnished by learning with gentoo linux as gentoo's installation procedures are entirely hands on and as a result will definitely provide an opportunity for vast learning experience into the core fundamentals with effectively understanding what makes a linux system function and being able to effectively manage or undertake many of the common tasks one would have to perform "under the hood" Learning fundamentals first has done much for my ability as a result since for the most part with linux having a graphical user interface is by default not even provided or necessary. Ubuntu effectively "cheats" users out of an opportunity to learn fundamentals before how to login to facebook with my "leenix os" because the installation is so simple a 9 year old could do it and your first exposure afterwards is a windows xp-ish desktop enviroment Gentoo also has a very good community supported wiki as well as what has likely become the most task specific documentation available for any linux distribution. If your serious about attempting to learn a really strong core set of fundamentals with linux I would highly recommend installing gentoo even in a virtual machine. here's the site links for the install handbooks http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/ and the gentoo wiki at http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Index:Tutorials With that said one of the grand highlights gentoo offers is the ability by design via installation tuning options to build all of the system's applications specific to your cpu type which can and really does provide far superior system stability and levels of os performance that can be seriously mind blowing. Imagine if your entire operating system was built with hardware specific optimizations. trust me the benchmark and stability results are usually double or triple what most other operating systems can achieve on the same hardware. Want a pure 64bit os tuned for an I7 intel? are your knees trembling yet? also installing apache and php in gentoo is incredibly simple after your core system installation is complete. there's even very informative guides provided on the required steps to get a fully featured apache + php webserver setup with more of those cpu specific optimizations. | Member | Night, Xartin...many blessings upon both your heads. I'll let you know how I fare. I'll even try to keep that whistling, whiny noise down to a minimum. I'm trying out the Gentoo/VM thing. By gum, I learnt me some mechanics by owning the crappiest 1974 VW Super Beetle ever...I'm going to learn this, too. Can't be any harder than twentieth century continental epistemological postmodernism. Can it? O.o Later on, I'll be building a virtual version of my old PC from the nineties if I can manage it. I want to play my original copy of Phantasmagoria that sits here on my desk like Ted Williams sits in a frozen canister waiting for science to catch up to his ego.
