Ahh yes Poyzon, the reason is that Pwnboxer needs to be in an area your user has permissions to.

So by default I just recommend people to create a folder on their desktop called Pwnboxer and put all the files in there.

Somehow in this thread the point got lost.

When I load PwnBoxer, I would like to know what configuration it just loaded.

From the replys, I am guessing this is not possible unless from what Tim said that for each configuration I set a new layout for each one with a different name. If it is there then it must be the configuration I want.

and if you have pwnboxer in an area that your user has permissions to edit like tim said, its simple, the last one you had loaded when you closed it, if you forgot which one that is, load the config you want and close it, and re open it.. but yer maybe you could add something, a small piece of text hidden in a corner that says what profile is loaded.

The answer is that Pwnboxer always loads the most recent configuration used.

He means he would like it visually displayed in the title bar or something of that nature... similar to how a browser displays the title of a web page in the titlebar. I guess his point is that not everyone is going to remember what profile was loaded last when they closed Pwnboxer.

Well that wouldn't be the case so much, since Pwnboxer goes by what configuration it has, versus what was potentially loaded and changed.

Just load/save unique files if you need to per-team. I personally probably have 20+ level 80 guys, and maybe 40+ level 70 guys, and I only use 1 Pwnboxer config for it all.

It appears that Pwnboxer makes a copy of the config you loaded and saves it to the Pwnboxer folder as Pwnboxer.pbcfg, then uses that the next time you launch it, instead of loading from the original configuration file.

Example:

Pwnboxer install folder: C:\Users\<username>\PwnBoxer

If you have installed Pwnboxer to some other folder, this repro scenario may not work for you. It definitely won't work if you installed to the C:\Program Files* folder.
  1. Rename the PwnBoxer.pbcfg file in your Pwnboxer install folder (something like PwnBoxer.pbcfg.old).
  2. Start Pwnboxer.
  3. Dismiss the message of the day.
  4. Open a saved configuration. In this case I open C:\User\<username>\1680x1050.pbcfg, a configuration file based on my main monitor's resolution.
  5. Exit Pwnboxer.
  6. Notice that you now have a PwnBoxer.pbcfg file in your install folder.
  7. Start Pwnboxer.
  8. Dismiss the message of the day.
  9. Notice that your last configuration is loaded. Well, the configuration is loaded, but not from the same configuration file you thought you had open originally. Keep reading.
  10. Exit Pwnboxer.
  11. This time, DELETE the PwnBoxer.pbcfg file in your install folder.
  12. Start Pwnboxer.
Notice how you're back to the default configuration that a fresh install of Pwnboxer creates? This essentially means that Pwnboxer is making a copy of your configuration in it's install folder and then uses that configuration the next time you launch.

Consider the following.
  1. Rename the PwnBoxer.pbcfg file in your Pwnboxer install folder (something like PwnBoxer.pbcfg.old).
  2. Start Pwnboxer.
  3. Dismiss the message of the day.
  4. Open a saved configuration. In this case I open C:\User\<username>\1680x1050.pbcfg; again, a configuration file based on my main monitor's resolution.
  5. Exit Pwnboxer.
  6. Start Pwnboxer.
  7. Dismiss the message of the day.
  8. Now, you should have the same configuration you had when you closed Pwnboxer.
  9. Add a new layout (click the <Add New> item in the Select Layout mode: list.
  10. Name is something like 'Foo'.
  11. Exit Pwnboxer (don't save the configuration).
  12. Start Pwnboxer.
  13. Dismiss the message of the day.
Notice that your 'Foo' layout is there even though we didn't explicitly tell Pwnboxer to save? Why's it there? Bug? Feature? Aliens?

This may have something to do with why I had multiple copies of my key remapping list in the config after a few crashes. At what point does it write updated data? Close? Exiting the object?
