Ualaa does make a good point about the cost benefits of investing in a multi threaded cpu.

Benchmarks are a good metric but don't often refrect real world senarios that typically vary. Every other program that your computer is running in the background from windows systems services or 3rd party software running tasks in parallel can have a great effect on how your game will perform alongside the other software.

The benchmark chart i linked is more than likely a controlled experiement with a clean windows install. after adding more unattended background tasks to a windows install running on a core i5 i'm willing to bet the results may be different with how well the core i5 performs vs the core i7.

For $100.00 more the i7-2600k would definitely come out in the lead if you took into consideration the 25 other tasks you could do and the 15 unattended tasks windows needs to do while you are playing warcraft at 100+ fps.

I have an i7 920 in my system running triple 23" 1080p displays which often has 10 firefox tabs open, usually watching HD bluray movies while playing multiple game clients. building my own system was a large investment pricetag but there's little in nearly two years that i've had any trouble doing with regards to multitasking while gaming. Had i of built a core i7 800 series instead I'm pretty sure I would have had to replace it last year
and upgrade to sandy bridge.
