Default Server Purchase

I'm considering the eventual purchase of a small server to use for storage and SVN use for my programming projects. Without spending an arm and a leg, what would be the best option without breaking the bank? Would a shuttle PC be fine if I'm not planning on running any "major services" like a Vent or Minecraft server? How much RAM would it need etc?

This would just be the PC. I'm sure there's a spare monitor lying around somewhere I could use when I need it. Thanks in advance

EDIT 6/13: after thinking about it some more, I'm thinking I'll just purchase an external hard drive, since all it would be used for is SVN control. Feel free to contribute to the thread, but I'm leaning more towards an external HDD now

Default Re: Server Purchase

Since you'd want to run linux, such as the Ubuntu Server distro, really anything would work, including systems that are 10 years old, all dependent upon what you want to install on it and how much traffic it will get. If it is just you using it for SVN, a system 15 years old would probably work as long as you had 512M of RAM.

Otherwise, for just yourself, a web server, sql server, SVN/CVS, FTP, SSH, anything with 768M pref 1G minimum RAM and 12G HD would work.

Default Re: Server Purchase

I had an old old computer from like 10 years ago which I believe I no longer have. Seems like i'd have to build a low-end $200-300 computer for a server and drop on a linux ubuntu boot from a pen drive, then get a SVN installed so I can access from TortoiseSVN.

For my purposes though (SVN and storage), which would be better: a low-end server or a dedicated [external] hard drive?
