Actually this sounds exactly like a problem I've had on a couple laptops: Heat sink on the GPU wasn't set right. Essentially take apart your laptop, remove the GPU heat sink, clean it like a SOB, then put some high end thermal paste on it (only costs usually 5 bucks), and then readd the stock heatsink. ALSO Depending on your laptop, locate the GPU memory chips. For about $8 you can buy a set of generic heatsinks, ones that are small profile. Locate your GPU memory chips and put a heatsink on literally each chip. The last set of heat sinks I bought had like 16 of them with self adhesive backings and I used it on 2 laptops + a 5870 I had laying around. Worked awesomely. What most people don't know is that it is actually really rare for a laptop to run its GPU at full speed, because the GPU itself will throttle speeds according to its temperature, and it makes those adjustments usually ever 1/2 second. So adding the chips + reseating your GPU can often improve performance quite a bit in addition to making it more stable.

when you installed the drivers, did you uninstall the old drivers using add/remove in windows? you can not install drivers over the older drivers as this will cause errors. what video card brand did you buy? evga, gigabyte, palit, etc? check all connections from the monitor to video card also try switching to a different DVI port on the video card. might be a unseated cable or a faulty cable, also check if any of the DVI pins are bent. also if you bought one of those "overclocked" video card versions, that might be the problem. Sometimes the video card can not run at the settings that the companies set it to. You can use a program like msi afterburner or evga has a program similar to that of the msi were you can lower the memory clock and other settings. try upping the fan speed in these programs and see if that helps, i would try a fan speed of 60%. I think the gigabyte cards had a bad bios for the 460 1GB cards were the fan was not turning to a higher setting automatically when the temps went up.

well im not sure but in all the excitement of putting the new system together i missed two screws of the motherboard and i was looking on a post someone had wrote where it says this can mean the there maybe wouldn't be enough grounding on the motherboard and this can cause problems is this true, and if so could it cause the video card to die ( both screws where located near pci-e slots

Haha okay disregard everything I typed above then about GPUs and heatsinks ![]() But really, try looking at your GPU temps, if so, add memory heat sinks to the GPU, that'll actually help. I do it to almost all my GPUs, except the one I have now since its so damn hard to take apart.

yes if the motherboard is not "grounded" it could cause problems. did you try putting the screw into holes and try again? If you do not have motherboard risers under the motherboard holes you will need those and some M3 screws to hold the motherboard in place. I would not bother using a different fan for the 460 as it might void your warranty if you take it apart and put a third-party fan on it. Just use a program to turn the fan speed up like msi afterburner Last edited by burningforce; 01-10-2011 at 05:28 PM.
