Intel Core i7-990X Extreme: Crazy Fast Got Faster - HotHardware When the i7 975 came out, I whipped that sucker up and drooled for months with that CPU under the hood of my PC. When the 980X came out, I had hard time resisting to buy it. That lasted about 3 days until I got it, and I sold my 975 extreme to a MB.com guy for one helluva good deal (for him). Now the 990X is out. Oh lawd, anybody want a 980X for a sweet deal?

Is this just a case of you want the best of the best, because it is the best? Or are you actually held back on something you want, because your CPU is the weakest link for some activity you use the computer for?

My question was more geared towards Tim. I understand wanting to have the top system that is available; my current system was fairly close to three thousand when I first picked it up. I've since upgraded the motherboard, processor and ram; while substantial upgrades, those were not anywhere near top of the line. From a cost point of view, top of the line is probably not worth it. But still, I'll likely go with a top end system several more times, as they're fun and therefore worthwhile.

I think it is more to have the best of the best. But then again, I told myself a while ago that I was waiting until Intel offered their gaming CPUs in 2x or 4x motherboards, and then go all out. Especially if I can get a mobo that offers 12x DDR3 RAM slots. So maybe I should hold out, hmm. | |

That mobo only accepts Xeons, plus its an older chipset. Xeons aren't as good for gaming as the 980/990 since they do not have the same CPU instruction extension sets. Even if it did accept non-Xeons, its an older chipset... Not to mention that EVGA's website for that mobo has said "More information coming soon... stay tuned for more details!" for almost AN ENTIRE YEAR which basically reeks of bad mojo.
