Default Working on the new site + Anybody a pro with video?

Sorry for the goofy post title

So yea, I might be a bit busy over the next week as I work on our new website, but I'm still going to try and fit in some daily broadcasts. They just might only be about 2 hours or so.

This brings another thing up. Does anybody here happen to know a boatload about video streaming? I'm looking to set up a server I can stream to, as well as others, and then have that server stream out to many others.

Is there a way VideoLan/VLC could be used for this?

Cheers all!
Tim

I can probably provide some info.

Do you want to stream live like you do now on justin.tv or just on demand clips that people can view later on?

On demand just requires a plain old web server. Live requires streaming server software and it will depend on what format you want. A pretty commonly used method right now is to broadcast flash (like you probably do now) to a flash compatible media server.

You mentioned server to many servers as well? Do you just want to accomplish scalability or something else?

if you meen a server in a Hosting servers in a datacenter then wharever the 2 that u could do is going to need and i meen hell loads off bandwich working in the with many datacenters over the world i got a few list u can use i hosted anythink from game files to big 10k users an hour on a forum to running game servers, yes a lot :P

there is not many justin.tv sites out there atm if know how to make a site like that then u could go into this and make a killing on "small" ads and ofc use it for your own use many would use this side u could do it just so us mutiboxers use it or even so the world can use it though the more useing it the more outgoing bandwich u need i know a few really cheep ones out there that can help with this

somthink like

Core2Quad 8300 + 8GB RAM + 1.5TB HDD + 1Gbps full duplex port + 200Mbps during Peak hours + max out your 1Gbps during offpeak hours - $899/month thats probey would run a site for now as u still maxing out 200 users

its just how far u like to take it but u could infact multiboxing.tv as a TV site

if u got endless $$$$$$ then u can setup a network

Actually what I was thinking of is streaming RTMP video to a VLC server, and then having the VLC server stream it to Justin.tv in multiple resolutions. Yea, just a thought

Ah.. basically live transcoding so you can spit out multiple bitrates. Not sure what's possible in that realm (if it even is).

Adobe and Microsoft are in beta with some multiple bitrate streaming options for flash and silverlight.. but I think the live stuff isn't available yet. Once it is you can run their encoder software to spit out multiple bitrates and the client can choose the best one from the server and jump back and forth during the stream as bandwidth changes. That multiple bitrate encoding is pretty computationally expensive though (so running wow on the same box might hurt).

Well not really transcoding either

I did some research and I think I figured out how to do it. Whoot going to mess around.
