Default Software for recording desktop, what all is available that works well?

What software is good for recording your desktop without broadcasting it?

I know adobe flash media encoder 2.5 can do this, and it is free, but I only get flv and f4v files...

What other software can I use, reasonably priced or free, that will allow other formats like wmv, mp4, avi, etc.?

I am going to be searching this afternoon, but I find some things are easier by recommendations from others who may have already used them.

EDIT: I am also curious as to what Tim is using for his video recording adventures...

CamStudio does an ok job, but the quality looks poor.

VHScrCap has a recorder, but also looks low quality.

What I am looking for is something that will record avi in high quality like 1080i or 720i like quality. Preferably under $100, wife isn't going to like it when I tell her I spent $250+ on desktop recording software.

If I could find a way to hide that much from her, I would, but she pinches pennies so tight I think I hear them begging for mercy every now and then.

Reason for the desktop recording software is when Rift comes out, I would like to do a quest by quest guide for each class and each quest.

Kasper, I use VhScrCap to capture my screen at 30fps, 1680 x 1050 resolution and then use VH Multicam to record it. It captures my screen flawlessly and I know other people who use it also for 3000kbps streaming.

Tim, As far as I am away uses Adobe Media Encoder 2.5

He has a full guide on the website, of how to correctly set up the media encoder. The encoder will screen cap for you with out the necessity to stream.

Exact Way to stream - Follow this but just miss bits out and adjust it to screen cap instead.

VhMulticam can pick up FME that way you can record your screen without streaming. You'll get there!

Kind Regards,

David

I thank you David for your input, but if you look at page 62 of that guide, you will see what I put in it...I am well aware of how to use it and how it works at this point, but my motherboard does not like the generic driver that I have to use to get sound with that setup, thus I record with sound and have no other sounds from anything else, or I have no sound in the recording.

I addressed the issue with EVGA about 40 times in the last six months and still have no fix for it. Thus, why I was looking for other programs that might do the job.

In actuality, I do think the mobo I have is defective somehow, I just don't know how to prove it to EVGA and it is over a year old. When I try to overclock, I cannot get past 3.2GHz, and I know it isn't my processor(I had the same processor at 4.6GHz in a similar x58 Gigabite board...not stable, of course, but ran a full 17 mins of prime before shutdown. If I had better water cooling, it may have been ok, but the chip got too hot too fast on the simple H50 water cooler I am using).

To clarify, do you mean you can get sound in the recording, but not through your speakers/headset, or vice versa?

I mean I have no sound in the recording on the current drivers I am using, or I can get the generic driver and have sound from my hdtv but nothing else, not even system sounds(beeps, dings, nothing).

It has to do with the fact that EVGA didn't have fully supported HDTV support like I am using. I have one of their earliest x58 boards. And, yes, they did tell me that the "monitor" I am using was not fully supported under the motherboard drivers available for my system(I use a 32" HDTV, not a regular monitor). And, it isn't that the TV isn't supported, it is that the sound through the hd cable wasn't originally supported, thus the problem I have issues with. I could hook up the right wires for it to work properly, but I do not have a rca to headphone type converter for them.

Use Camstudio with DivX codec. Set the recording to be 1-pass and bitrate to 20,000kbit/sec.

The quality with that method is unbeatable.

The DivX codec pack is giving me errors on camstudio...keeps saying the buffers are all full or "the specified device handle is invalid. in Stop()"...then tells me Error recording AVI using current compressor, Use default compressor?

And still no audio in the file...I think it is time for a new Motherboard...

I will play with this setup when I get back, have to go out for a few hours...the avi using lower settings with the divX looks much better, but still no sound.
