Smile Feedback question...

I was wondering for those who 2/3/4/5 box or higher have issues in major cities like Org, UC, TB Shat City, or Dalaran? I am curious to see what computer specs you are using when entering very congested cities or areas of WOW and how your computer handles it. This is to let me know what I can look forward to or expect when I upgrade my computer next weekend.

Thanks

Pretty much anywhere there are massive numbers of bodies will cause lag. The primary reason is due to the item ID loadings your PC does for those characters, as well as tracking of movements of each character.

So for all of us, this means Dalaran. For those high pop servers, this can also mean Orgrimmar (and Ironforge?).

I've seen that an E8400 with 4GB ram will run fine. However, with the recent price drops of the i7 systems, you might as well get one of those with 6GB ram.

Video card wise, an nvidia 9800 or ati 4780 would be great too.

Old system:
Q6600 @2.4 ghz (stock)
8gb DDR2 ram @800mhz
Sapphire 4870X2 video
One wow folder on a 10k rpm Raptor, six folders using Symbolic Links.
Was using KC at the time.

Would lose follow just mounted with five toons on epic mounts and crusader aura on the lead toon.

Could easily lose follow on epic flyers in Icecrown, especially with crusader aura on; even with Crusader off, I'd basically need to stop every 3-4 second or follow would break.

Upgraded System:
i7 920, stock speed.
12gb DDR3 ram @1600mhz
Sapphire 4870 X2 video
One wow folder on the same Raptor 10k rpm hard drive (virtual config files).
Currently using IS for boxing.

Can get epic speed elephants stuck in doorways in Dalaran, for example running up the steps the FP guy. However, I cannot cause follow to break on epic mounts running around the streets or sewers.

Can eventually lose follow, if the Paladin is leading and has Crusader aura on. Cannot lose the toons with epic flyers, with Crusader aura off, even changing elevation and trying to lose them.

Whichever toon is your lead toon should have every graphic option cranked down to the minimum. I'd recommend increasing view distance to maximum and spell effects to somewhere in the middle.

Every other toon should have every effect all the way down.

Ensuring your AA is 1x AA, and not 2x or 4x as that really slows a system down.

Also turn shadows off completely, they are a major resource hog.
The only time you need shadows, is for the monthly event where you need to stand in a torches shadow in order to catch it - the event with the bonfires.

The single largest improvement you can do for cities is to have your slave/follower toons look directly down.
This is relatively easy to do with the saving of views.
Go from toon to toon, zoom in all the way and look down from directly over head. Then save the view to say (2). Do another save view to say (3), which is what you'll use when you want them looking up (example for a ground target spell).
.... /script SaveView(2) ..... is the syntax to save a view.
You can make a macro, or preface a macro with:
.... /script SetView(2);SetView(2) .... to instantly switch to a previously saved view.
If its just one SetView instead of the two, you slowly zoom to that view instead of instantly switching.
