Default Re: Exact way to stream with FME to JTV - READ HERE

Well, I said I'd be back... I just didn't know how soon.

I have three questions.

First of all - and bare with me here, I am completely new to streaming - what was all this about? The guide says:

Quote:
"Simply run the justin.bat file and it should pop up a black window that scrolls some stats about FPS and bitrate. Now you're streaming!"
But when I run the bat file a couple of black windows pop up and quickly disappear again. And it seemed that to start my actual streaming, I had to go and click "start stream" on justin.tv anyway, something I also seemingly could do before i did all this. What does running the bat file actually do? Do I just have to do it and then start the stream manually through the site? Do I have to "stop" it somehow? (Told you I was a newbie).

Secondly, my stream doesn't appear to have any sound. I thought it could be because I had two options for sound device and I chose my Headset, while there was a Realtek one I could choose as well, but I tried switching to it and running my stream, then watching it afterwards, and there was no sound.

Thirdly, my stream is literally just a view of the top left of my screen. I couldn't begin to tell you why. Also, maybe unrelated (and somewhat hard to determine since my stream covers such a small area), it seemed somewhat choppy. As in when I moved my mouse around, it wasn't very smooth.

I'm feeling slightly confused here. I'm not even sure what the VHScrCap program does. Should it stay open? I also noticed that in the main screen of it, there's a full 10 different lines, one of which has (active) behind it. I think I might have started the bat file too many times (started it a couple more just now to test this very theory), since some of them do have the 30 frame rate I designated, while the one currently active only has the starting 15.

Perhaps I should have started with something simpler

Be sure the filepaths to fme.exe and your xml file are correct. Sounds like a bad filepath or you didn't save your xml in UNICODE.

Sounds like you chose the wrong audio source? I'm not exactly sure what your audio choices are. I can help you better with a bit more info

Sounds like the width and height are off. Change those dimensions in your justin.xml file. Also, the reason for the choppiness might be your upload speed. If it's low (or if your computer is on the lower end) it will be choppy

if done correctly, the command prompt window when launching the bat file should stay open.

If you need any further help, just let me know. I also have teamviewer if it comes to that.

Thanks for the help! I think I know what some of my problems were. Or at least I hope so. I am not sure my .bat file was saved in unicode, since when I clicked "save as" this time (I am doing it all over again from scratch, just to be sure) something else was the default option. Presumably, this in turn messed up my cropping, since the default profile in FME seems to have 320x240 as the resolution, and the preview indeed matches my messed up view.

I am not sure about sound, though. I have two options in FME: "Microphone (2- Logitech USB Headset)", and "Realtek Digital Input (Realtek". (Yes, it just cuts off like that, with no end parenthesis, also in the text profile file) If I have the mic select, the preview sound bar in FME moves when I talk. Nothing happens with the other. Is there some other way that gives my stream standard sound (I am not planning on using my mic just yet, just game and mp3 sound)?

As for the choppiness, I suppose I should get my stream up and running before I can say something about that. My computer is pretty good though, and the connection varies, but should be from 50mbit to 100mbit, up and down (University ).

I am doing the whole thing over again now, but I am worried that the sound problem won't be fixed, since the FME preview doesn't seem to indicate it.

As for your sound, if you want game sound, you have a few choices.

First, be sure you have something called stereo mix. If you don't see it, check to see if it's disabled. Otherwise check for an audio driver for your system that has stereo mix.

If you can't find stereo mix, you'll need to invest no more than $10 in some speaker wires to get game sound to your headset and your computer. I'll go into more detail if we cross that bridge.

There was something that I found awhile back ago regarding Stereo Mix on Windows 7 mostly. If you have the Stereo Mix selected in FME and still not getting sound on the FME, go to Stereo Mix properties and check the DCC Offset Cancellation. Shut down and reboot. The sound should become active in FME afterwards.

Okay, so Stereo Mix was disabled by default. I've enabled it, and made sure DCC Offset Cancellation was checked (it was by default), but still no sound. I tried rebooting to see if Stereo Mix needed it, but the preview in FME still won't show any response to winamp.

Right.. I thought the problem with my .bat file was the lack of saving in Unicode, but now there's a different problem. When I run it, it just flashes in and out (faster than last time), and when I run it through cmd I get this:

I thought my only problem now was the sound, how naive of me.

Btw, I am running 64bit Windows 7.

Did you truly save it as a batch file?

Check the icon of the .bat and see if it's a notepad

Alright, I experimented a bit with saving the .bat file in different encoding. That previous screenshot shows what happens if it's Unicode or "Unicode big endian". If I save it in ANSI (default choice) I get:

If I save it in UTF-8 (just to see what happened), I get:

It's definitely a .bat file. At first it had the old .bat.txt, but I took a cue from the guide video and renamed it in cmd. Under "type" it says Windows Batch File.

Edit: I see that in the videos he had my original problem, but it was fixed when he changed to Unicode. I get that strange error that I don't quite understand when I save it in Unicode. No idea how to proceed. Can't see that I've done anything but edited in the specific entries that he did in the video and that the written guide says. Can it be a Windows 7 thing, or a 64 bit thing? Then again, all the actual programs are running seemingly fine.
