Patty, are you using FME 2.5, or 3.x? Try 2.5, it is a lot less cpu intensive.

Also streaming in general takes a lot of CPU power, and none of the AMD processors, even their X6, has the pure CPU power of any of the new i7 systems, not even close I'm afraid.

I hate stereo mix so much. I have it enabled in the Windows 7 sound options. It's not muted. It's set as the default device. In the "listen" tab, it's set to playback through my audio source (Realtek Digital Output). All the levels are set correctly. It should be working, but it's not. It's not picking up anything from digital audio output. The stereo mix levels don't move and I don't get any sound on my stream.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Is it because I'm using a digital output for my sound, and maybe stereo mix can only pickup analogue sounds?

Unfortunately, I believe Stereo Mix can only pick up analog sounds.

Indeed. I figured that out. I plugged my headphones directly into my onboard sound and set them as speakers and now my stream has sound.

Sucks though because my headphones don't sound very good through my onboard audio, but oh well. I'm glad I have a stable stream that's lag free and decent quality.

Thanks anyway dood

Sure thing! Glad to hear you got things working.

Hi, I wanted to say first thank you for this guide. After reading I able to stream but I guess I need help fine tuning FME for my computer and connection. I only have 1.68 upload and a mid line gaming PC(Athalon II quad core).

I have two 5770's in crossfirex and what bummed me out is that I can only use one card since my game has to be in window mode for it to get captured.

Another problem I have is my monitor resolution, which is 1680x1050. FME does not support it so it chooses 1920x1080. After trying to stream I don't think my connection is good enough to make that resolution look good. I messed around with VHScrCap and FME settings and made my output to 1280x720. Streaming at that resolution is just fine if I could get it to work.

I try to stream at 1000 data rate and 30 fps, but for some reason in the command prompt window my fps is around 9 and the bit rate is extremely low. Starts out around 300ish then drops down to under 100 and if anything is actually happening on my screen I guess the stream crashes because it says the session has ended and stops displaying information about the stream.

Any Ideas on how I can fix this and optimize my settings? Thanks ahead of time and sorry for the essay.

Hmm, your data rate might be a bit too high considering you have a low upload speed. Try 750 and see if you get a better framerate

That helped I think. I'm sure the quality went down a bit but it's up to 19 fps now. Not sure why not at 30 like I have it set to.

The stream still crashes though because the bitrate drops as low as 50, i'm not sure why it's doing that.

I set this up and it works great except for two things. Both are in the Flash Media Encoder.

First I can't set the resolution to my screen size 1600x900.

I set device to VHScrCap. underneath that it has a drop down menu for size and there is no option for 1600x900. So when I stream a large portion of the screen is cut off or there is empty space filled in with pink and it looks awful. Is there a way to fix this?

Second I can't get sound from my speakers, only from my microphone. The Audio Device drop down menu only shows "Microphone (Realtek High Defini"

I tried installing the driver on the first post but no luck.

Thanks a lot for this guide it has been really helpful.

EDIT:
Just figured out how to use the sound. You have to go to control panel, sound, record, right click, show disabled devices. The Stereo mix comes up and you can right click it and make it default. After this it shows up in FME.

So only thing left to figure out is to get the proper resolution. I can temporary fixed it by setting my computer to 1280 x 720 but it sucks to play games on that resolution...

Set FME to 1920x1080 and use the crop feature to cut out the blank space. It will use extra CPU resources but it's what you have to do if you don't have a 16:9 monitor.
