Default Re: Exact way to stream with FME to JTV - READ HERE

Alright, I've got my new cooler on and the processor clocked up to 3ghz up from 2.6 with no measurable change in performance of FME. This is all using the VP6 codec. I know it's a small upgrade in processor speed but I'm really feeling there is something big I'm missing about why I can't get more than 15 fps out of FME using VP6. I understand about it being single-threaded and using only a maximum percentage of the processor but I've seen streams from people with very similar hardware getting beautiful, flawless streams.

The other idea I see being posted a lot here is using h.264 since it's multi-threaded. Switching to this codec, using the lowest baseline for 1920x1080 (4.0) and 1750 bitrate gives me about 25 fps with no frame drop. However, h.264 seems to have a very low level of quality for movement in games. The screen flickers in and out of a blocky, blurry mess to something of decent quality.

Anyone know anything else I can try? If I can get a solid 20 fps without the quality fluctuating like it does with the h.264 codec, I will be satisfied.

EDIT: After toying around some more, I turned my cropping back on, back to the VP6 codec (avg quality, 10 second keyframe, no noise reduction, medium datarate, dedicated cpu) and I let windows sort out the usage of cores (I didn't assign it to core 7 with /affinity 80 this time). FME now reports about 19-20 fps with a few frame drops (1 frame every 15 or so seconds). Not sure why this seems to be working better all of a sudden. The bitrate I've been trying was 3000 for testing and I've just dropped it down to a more reasonable 2000. I seem to be dropping a frame every 10 seconds or so now but the fps output reads 20. Even still, this seems to be watchable. (mini update, after running for about 23 minutes, I average 17.7 fps with a frame drop every 15.6 seconds.)

Changing the quality output of VP6 doesn't seem to have an effect on the dropped frames nor the actual quality of the stream. FME is up to 16% of CPU usage spread across the cores. So, as it stands now, I am satisfied with what I have, though I'm not sure how I got it. I'll keep updating if I find more useful information that might help others.

Doing a quick test, I turned the quality of VP6 from lowest to highest and turn noise adjustment to slight from none, fps went down to 15-14. Turned noise adjustment off entirely and fps went back up to 20-22. Noise reduction seems to have a pretty hard effect on fps.

I have a q6600 so I set it up like this
CD "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Flash Media Encoder 2.5"
start /affinity 8 /high FMEcmd.exe /p c:\fme\console.xml

The problem is, it just wont register that change. I save that in the bat file and go check the task bar and there is no change, all cpu cores are checked and its at normal. Does the part where it says "c:\fme\console.xml" have to direct where the bat file is located?
I tried alot of things but it still wont register the affinity and cores at start

Any ideas?
My bad... that should've said c:\fme\justin.xml. Its console.xml on my system because I have a couple different .bat files depending on what I'm streaming.

After playing with the stream for a while, it seems like I'm still have a little trouble with dropped frames. If I set the bitrate to a high 3000, at first I'm getting about a frame drop every 10 seconds with an average of about 16.7-17 fps. With my bitrate at a lower 1750, I had an average frame drop of 1 every 3-4 seconds and an fps of closer to 15 or 14.

If I set the bitrate to 2500, however, so far in 2 minutes, I've gotten my first drop just now, with an average fps of 19. Weird how too much bitrate or too little bitrate have adverse effects.

EDIT: Perhaps sometime soon, I will experiment with the bitrates to find out the relation between that, dropped frames, and average fps.

Thanks. I tried that but unfortunately there is no difference.
It should register the change but it just doesn't, I don't get it...
I did everything exactly like you guys said.
I run windows 7 64bit btw, so tried running it in administrator mode but no help either. There has to be a reason.

Any more ideas?

So I was looking to run vhmulticam through batch file, but it doesn't seem to be working, It opens the command prompt window then closes out instantly but it does open vhmulticam in the process. is this just not possible?

Did some more testing today with the bitrate. The way it seemed to me was that the bitrate had a minimum requirement to remove the event of dropped frames. For me, this was about 2200. Beyond that, I saw no change in fps (capped around 19.5) and dropped frames (usually anywhere from no drops in a 3 minute test to 5-10 seconds between dropped frames). I toyed with the quality of VP6 and noise reduction. Both of these (as expected) dropped my fps output to 8-11. The more I look at it, the quality output of VP6 on any setting is pretty bad. Not sure what options I have there, though. H.264 gives me fairly bad results as well. I've now gone back to my original settings and once again, I can only get about 15 fps out.

This is frustrating because not an hour ago was I using these exact settings and getting 19 fps out. Back to the drawing board I guess.

EDIT: I went back and tried it again, back to hovering around 19fps, not sure what that's about. Another setting I played with just now is the CPU usage in the VP6 settings. I turned it from Dedicated to Low expecting to see some sort of difference. Quite the contrary, stream has been up for about 7 minutes now and I'm averaging 20.5 fps which is the highest I've seen it without partial frame drops. The frame drops are at a low 1 per 17 seconds which is fine.

Basically its like this:

VP6 - When bandwidth is capped, frames drop, quality stays.

H.264 - When bandwidth is capped, frames do NOT drop, quality drops.
