Seen this before and it's still awesome to watch over and over again. I still cringe at the trampoline part. He should have had a model do that part.

The cheapest 256gb SSD on newegg right now is $715, now multiply that by 24x and you get $17,160 and that's not counting the RAID Cards or the cables.

And on top of that when this was filmed those drives might have been $1500 or more each *cringe*

...I'm about to put 4 x 80gb SSD's in RAID0 and that's gonna hurt heh

Don't forget to post your trampoline clips.

The Trim command doesn't function in Raid 0.
Is that a consideration?

fun stuff, but maybe samsung gave them the drives to test? Hopefully they did and did not have to pay out of pocket, I seen this vid when SSD were first hitting the market and were "really" expensive

like ualaa has asked, what about trim? I the intel drives have a utility for garbage collection and what not, not sure if it works in a raid enviroment though.

but post some benchmarks with the drives in raid if you are still going to do it
I would like to see you max out your sata controller

I did not take Trim into consideration (not even gonna touch the comment that just popped into my head) (or the other one that just popped.. nvm)

I am hoping by the time these take a big hit the prices will have come way down, or maybe they will have something coded via chipset to handle this on the next gen versions.

Plus even with slowdown I'd have to imagine they would still outperform a single drives data rates. My plans have changed slightly and I misspoke earlier it was 4x 64gb but it appears those drives are no longer available. I was looking into a SLC SSD rather then a MLC one, while more expensive they are definitely more reliable and and the life expectancy is much longer.

But the more I think about it, I rarely use a drive more then 7yrs. I'd imagine by the 7 year mark we may be measuring SSD's in TB's hell maybe even PB's. And Im pretty sure they will make the current fast SSD's look like they are standing still.

As for the Trim question, not really sure. I know there is talk of trim support chips for the next gen drives. It may be possible to just run Trim seperately from Dos after post on certain drives. I haven't done enough research to find out if its possible to take the drives out of raid, Trim them then put the drives back in raid. If Trim is only cleaning up trash then no actual data should be affected. I did see someone ask a similar question in the Intel forums, an answer from another user gave an answer along my line of thinking but havent seen a Intel tech answer it.

It seems like the limitation is one set by Windows, or possibly the chipset forces it upon Windows. If you think about Trim as a Defrag for SSD's, you can defrag a Raid drive, theoretically you should be able to Trim a Raid0 since they are striped in such a manner to act as one drive, and look as 1 drive to the OS. I need to look more into it. Am I wrong is assuming you can take a raid out of RAID0 and reformat as 4x individual drives, log into windows, Trim them individually then put them back in RAID0 and install the image backup?

I currently do a full backup once a week on my RAID0 V.Raptors. Since I hear mixed reviews of SSD I plan to do a full back up 3 times a week on scheduler. After all RAID0 is all or none, so if 1 fails, all fail, and I'll have 4x the chances of that happening. If 3 times a week seems like a lot of wasted time slowing down my PC. I am away on dialysis Tues, Thurs & Sun. so it seems like the logical place to schedule backups since I'm gone 8hrs on those nights.

I'd like to hear more info on this though, if someone has links to informative pages on SSD's please share. Here is one on the difference between SLC and MLC.

Found that one very informative.

I'm very tempted to put two or four SSD's into Raid 0, and use that for both the operating system and the gaming folder. That's why I was asking about your take on TRIM.

From what I've read, you cannot run TRIM on a drive in Raid. I've heard of quite a few people striping them regardless. Multiple drives in Raid0 will be faster then a single drive, but an SSD is really fast regardless.

The taking it out of RAID, running TRIM on each, and then restoring with an image could be the way to go.

Of course I want to put my OS drive as well as wow folder on the SSD, or else Id just buy 4 tiny drives, you don't need more then 20gb anyway, I think my folder is at 17.5gb or around there and I have loads of addons, screenshot, 5x accounts, and logs in there.

But keep in mind if you run the OS off the SSD raid, you would have to have just a basic install with Trim supported on a partition on one a drive not in the raid. I have a 10gb partition on my raptor raid0 I was going to install xp to, don't see the need now that I have virtual xp mode. Whats a standard windows 7 install take up anyway? I think MLC lifespan is plenty long enough unless you get a bad drive, I see patriot ssd's have a 10 year full warranty, thats perfect in my book, even if I have to swap out a few til I get a gold core version heh. That leaves me leaning towards Newegg.com - Patriot Torqx M28 Series PTX128GS25SSDR 2.5" 128GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - SSD Pros: its a 128gb drive, up to 220mb/s read 200mb/s write, 10 year warranty Cons: $429 per drive, which means I'll have to build the raid at 1 drive per month

If I can do raptor dailies 20 days in a row x5 for my team, I think I can wait 1 month per drive to the raid. The first reviewer on that link states he has 2 in RAID0, and after 1 month he hasn't noticed a decrease in performance but he old mentioned something else that perked up my ears. He says he leaves his PC on 24/7 to let Samsungs trash collector work. Which means there are solutions to keep SSD's in RAID0 lean and mean. My PC only gets turned off to vacuum dust off the fan guards and to can air dust the inside of any dust that made it inside. I'm looking forward to this, I think I might order 1 now.
