i’m doing a little research on how to assign professions on my teams (4 teams of 5). i made sure every profession is covered and an enchanter is present on any team. every cloth wearer is a tailor for crafting “cloths” with cooldowns. blacksmithing on 2 plate wearers, there was a time where titansteel has a cooldown as far as i can remember. i have 3 jewelcrafters as a source for JC items - dragonseye (or similar in cata release). now there used to be cooldowns on leatherworking too (vanilla wow, saltshaker) but they removed it sometime in TBC. i’m not aware of any leatherworking item that triggers a cooldown in WotLK. i googled for leatherworking in cataclysm and they don’t seem to have patterns that trigger cooldowns as well. i’m not sure if i’ll just go ahead and pick alchemy for the rest (that don’t have 2 professions already) or leatherworker for leather/mail wearers, i already have one leatherworker. i think alchemy (transmutations) is a sure thing and 1 leatherworker should be enough unless there’s something i don’t know yet about leatherworking in cataclysm.

If you are going after cash, try making a lot of them have Alchemy. Ualaa has an awesome way to literally print cash, I think he could make something like a million gold in a month (just taking a stab here).

You have three general options, for your main team. You can try to cover all of the production and gathering professions. Then take this team through all of the instances, heroics and raids, which should eventually get you all of the dropped recipes. Once you have a fair bit of gold, purchasing/farming the drops and then listing (in limited quantities) the best and the best fresh-to-85 crafted gear, will likely be the best money maker period. You can also min/max bonuses for your team. In the current game, for most classes you get the best bonuses from two of these three: Blacksmithing (extra socket slots) Inscription (Inscription Shoulder enchants > Other Shoulder Enchants), and Jewelcrafting (the JC specific gems). Chances are there will be professions which are slightly better then others, as far as the bonuses granted. PvP heavy teams, usually go for Engineering. Finally, you can also treat the team like an alternate team, basically one of each gathering profession plus an enchanter, purely for disenchant purposes. And then have every toon with Alchemy, as that will have a daily (20 hour) transmute which produces an item used in every other production skills recipes. I'm running 34 Alchemists, and currently that's for Jewelcrafting gems. At the start of an Arena Season/Raid Dungeon, gems go for 200-250g per gem. At this point in the expansion, they range from 60-110g, which is still 2.5k a day for 45 minutes of logging in each day.
