Default Anyone into D&D?

Just a thought in the back of my head about playing D&D. Anyone interested? It'd all be done online on a virtual tabletop. I'm thinking Wednesday nights since its pretty much the only night I know I'm not doing anything. Maybe running for 4-5 hours a week. I might be interested in DMing too (working on the campaign at work ). Let me know if you guys have played or are really interested in playing.

Yes, it'd be 4th edition.

Any questions?

Probably not free for a couple of months.. but am really into D&D. Pretty much, have all the core books, along with setting specific stuff for campaigns of interest, for everything from Advanced Second Edition through the current Fourth Edition stuff.

My current group tries to play every Saturday (but takes the summer off, when I'm in Calgary doing the sales thing), and we probably average 3.5 Saturday's a month, for 5-6 hours a session. Of course a good chunk of that is talking, and maybe only half of that is adventuring.

My roommate used to be a Dungeon Master, so we would alternate campaigns or at least adventures, giving us each an opportunity to play. Now, he's willing to play, but not willing to take the time to build too many adventures. So for the last couple of years, I've been a full time DM for 90% of our campaigns/adventures.

I'm working on a 21st-30th adventure, involving clearing the Abyss and eventually some assorted evil deities such as Lolth, Torog, Tiamat etc. Of course, there's the twist about who wants this done and why... which will necessitate the party deciding to side with the lesser evil to take out the greater, or to oppose both; PC's can be any alignment, and one will probably be evil although I know another wishes to go with a Paladin of Bahamut... I've been a fan of epic level play, since the beginning... and this will have the party battle against almost every high level monster with a stat block, which should be fun.

That's a lot of experience, Ualaa. Even if you aren't able to join us right away, I'd definitely love some pointers about DMing and campaign writing.

I have </3 for 4th...

I've got something similar to Ualaa, Most saturdays every month, 3.5, for about 8 hours a session.

It's almost my turn to run a campaign, I've never DM'd before, I'm nervous.

I'd be willing to play 3.5 if enough people wanted and another person wanted to DM. The learning curve would be a bit much along with DMing.

3/3.5 would work, but I've not played the system in quite a while. While there are broken/exploitable combos in 4th edition, these are relatively minor compared to 3/3.5.

One of the bigger selling points for 4th, is the ease in making encounters compared to previous editions. In 3rd (or 3.5th), if I wanted a monster/npc villain I was supposed to start it at whatever level, give it feats and items, class levels etc, ie., justify its power, defenses and attacks. In 4th, I can pick a role (artillery, brute, skirmisher, soldier, etc) and level, and know its defenses are (AC = Level +12, etc). Mobs/Creatures which will die in an encounter, are quick to generate, and the focus is more on a story that works, then on the mechanics for a given encounter.

With 3/3.5, there is the System Reference Document, which has all the rules of the core game, but none of the fancy supplements. So you could play any core (PHB) class quite well, but a multiclass Fighter/Paladin/Monk who took the Vow of Poverty (from Book of Exalted Deeds) would not be possible using the SRD (that particular character was rather run to play, in a previous campaign).

Via torrents, I have a full and illegal distributed (free) version of every 4th edition book which I own. It is certainly easy to acquire the books this way, if you want them. You could also get a subscription to D&D Insider, which is $9.95/mo or $71/year, which gets you the character builder and compendium, along with digital versions of everything.

What would you use for the virtual table top? I haven't played D&D in 25 years. lol

I sometimes wondered wether or not people played D&D over the internet somehow. Obviously you could use vent or the like for voice communication but the table top thing... Hmm
