Default 4.0.1 Memory problems

I never had any problems before with my 6GB RAM, but now with the new patch I run out of memory with all five clients up, at least in Dalaran.

I run the main on a separate installment, with everything on ultra, just like always. The slaves run on much lower settings with low resolution.

I have to admit a performance hit with this last patch as well. I didn't even touch my video settings when I first setup (all 5 instances on the same PC) as I have windows 7, 16gb memory i7 860 cpu. Figured it was overkill. Pre-patch, I had my settings up fairly high, even going through Dalaran etc, not even a hiccup.

But with 4.01 I only get 60/30/30/30/30 fps when in instances. Otherwise, I float between 30-45 on my main when doing dailies around ICC. And I've cranked down the settings on all clients to Fair, and turned off shadows.

I need to test with the various add-ons, but sorta disappointed so far.

Sometimes I will get random huge fits of client lag, usually fixed by restarting the game.

Alright, put in another 6GB, so now I can run around in Dalaran if I set liquid detail to High and not Ultra. I have no idea why that detail is particularly taxing.

If your video card has the capabilities try enabling directx 11 instead of just using DX9. I noticed a huge performance increase with DX11. also I had several graphics bugs with DX9 which made game usability very unstable.

You could try deleting your Cache folder.

Yeah deleting cache, updating addons, all that is done. It seems something is very different in how WoW handles memory now though. Windows caches a lot of RAM when I start up five instances of WoW. This is fine, and WoW should start up a lot faster should I want to play again after I shut it down.

However, when I do try to start up my team again after a break, WoW does NOT get that RAM back from Windows. The cache stays at 7-8GB and WoW starts trying to get new RAM to use.

I have no idea what causes this, and I don't know what to do lest I restart my computer before starting up the games.

Edit: Windows 7 64

What OS are you running? Are you running five wow clients on only 4GB RAM? Does that run well?
