Default Tim reviews Razer Naga MMOG mouse

A standard mouse has 2, maybe 3 buttons. A gaming mouse typically has 4-6 buttons. But what if your mouse had 17 buttons? Well, the Razer company was so kind as to ship me one of their Razer Naga gaming mice to review. Yes folks, there is practically an entire keyboard on this mouse! We are doing a full unboxing and review of their mouse, including all the materials it comes with, to the software setup and configuration and actual use.

The specifications of the Naga from the Razer website:
  • 5600dpi Razer Precision 3.5G Laser Sensor
  • 1000Hz Ultrapolling? / 1ms response time
  • 200 inches per second max tracking speed
  • Zero-acoustic Ultraslick? Teflon feet
  • 17 MMO-optimized buttons (including 12 button thumb grid)
  • Optional MMO-specific software AddOns
  • Unlimited character profiles with AddOns
  • Approximate size: 116L x 69W x 41.6H (in mm)

Here is our 45 minute video reviewing this fine piece of hardware:

First words:

The mouse is an visually a stunning piece of hardware. The flat matte black top is starkly contrasted by the high gloss sides. The mouse USB cable is some sort of braided material, adding to the high class feel of the pointing device. The resolution of the mouse in-game was amazing. You can actually single out individual pixels with this mouse, that is how fine the control is. The mouse also glides smoothly across my flat surfaced desk. It took only minutes to get used to the placement of the 12 keys on the side.

After setting up the easy software GUI, I gave it a test in World of Warcraft, multibox style. I loaded up 3 Shaman, all level 80, and proceeded to obliterate Alterac Valley. Whereas I used to press my attack and multiboxing assist macros with my right hand, requiring me to let go of the mouse, now I can do so in a seamless way. For example, the mouse keys 5-9 are all mapped to specific Shaman multiboxing DPS macros, whereas the first 1-4 keys are used for party arrangements, follow mode, etc.

Here are some of the bullet points after using the mouse for a few days:

PROS
  • The mouse has an INSANE amount of buttons. Lately I have been multiboxing rogues, and having their twitch buttons right on the actual mouse makes stunlocking targets into death EZ mode.
  • The buttons light up in a very crisp and clear way, making visual reference of the buttons quite easy.
  • The software is extremely simple and easy to set up. You simply plug the mouse in, set the keys to mirror your keyboard or numpad, and you are rocking!
  • The mouse resolution and responsiveness is much better than any mouse I have used before.
CONS
  • I wish the keys would be programmable VS mirroring the keyboard/numpad
  • You cannot use your thumb to firmly grip the mouse as their are keys in the way (12 keys, duh!)
On a personal preference, the mouse would perform better for me if it was 35-50 grams heavier.

Final Review: Anybody who multiboxes in World of Warcraft, or anybody who is a true MMO competitor needs to get their hands on this mouse as it opens up new strategic ways to take user desire into immediate in-game action. This mouse is a beast!
