Default Is lag what causes me to stop following?

I noticed while multiboxing that my guys will randomly lose follow, is this because of the server lag?

It can be, but a few things:

Make sure your FPS never goes below 7, prefer 10, on all your guys.
Combat breaks follow
World environment (ie bumps, stairs, etc) can stick your guys

Basically just get used to hitting your follow button often

Jamba is an option (addon).
It has a lot of neat features.

One of those is strobe follow.
Which has the addon do a /follow command, every "x" seconds.
The default is 3, but you can set it to 1.

Strobe has had an issue since the last major patch.
Where toons get confused who the leader to follow is, when in combat.
Which can be extremely annoying and even fatal to the toons.

Assuming it is fixed, strobe is very nice indeed.
Even without using strobe, Jamba includes a lot of extremely nice features.
Definitely makes boxing 20x easier in many regards.

The Jamba functionality Ualaa mentioned essentially spams the the follow command for you.

I prefer this addon however...
KeepFollowing - Addons - Curse

In a way, Jamba Strobe is automation.

Press the hotkey once.
And you have the game receive /follow, once per second, for as long as you are online (or until canceled).

However, it is a function done by an addon.
And you can only do what the API allows.
You are never in trouble for using an addon to do what Blizzard lets addons do.
But, there's a good chance that functionality will eventually be removed.
And if you are used to it, and have become reliant on it, that sucks when its gone.

What we need really is a mod that does only 1 thing - Follow Strobe. Jamba is a bit too full of other things for me to be useful (and I think for others as well) but a simple addon that is GREEN for strobe-on and RED for strobe-off, and that can be turned on/off by a hotkey, would be absolutely fantastic.
