iPhone app review of the week (11/22 - 11/28)

App: Shazam (free)
Ever hear a song on the radio or when you are out and about and think to yourself, "I LOVE this song?" The old fashioned way involves writing down the lyrics for a quick Google search later on. But sometimes, that just doesn't work.
Enter Shazam, a free download from the iTunes app store. If you own a iPhone or 2nd gen iPod touch, this app is a necessity. All you have to do is tap the "tag now" button, hold the microphone up to the music source and let Shazam take care of the rest. But how good is it?
I randomly chose 100 songs from my library of over 2000, ranging from rock to melodic trance. Shazam was able to identify about 85-90% of them. I believe Shazam has issues with obscure songs (like Buckethead for example).
Best yet, when you tag a song, you are able to see the artist's discography, search for it on youtube, and even download it straight from iTunes (when applicable)
Pros:
Cons:
All in all, Shazam is an excellent app to have for your iPhone and iPod touch.

Pros:
- Free!
- Simple to use interface
- Ability do download tagged songs directly from iTunes
- Successfully identifies most songs
Cons:
- Obscure and newer tracks may not be recognized
- You cannot sing or hum the track, and it only works with studio versions of the song (that means no live performances either)
- Music has to be somewhat loud (loud enough so you can hear it clearly) otherwise Shazam will be unable to recognize it
All in all, Shazam is an excellent app to have for your iPhone and iPod touch.
